The Oakland A’s lack of a Bay Area radio station and subsequent extension of the franchise’s partnership with TuneIn, which will exclusively stream A’s games for local fans, has caught the attention on the consumer press which is calling foul over the move.
“There’s nothing good about the A’s radio news” was the headline in the San Francisco Chronicle. The New York Post proclaimed, “Oakland Athletics’ radio fiasco is MLB slap in the face.” Post reporter Phil Mushnick writes, “If I’m commissioner, that A’s move won’t happen. I don’t care if the team is forced to buy its own radio time and sell its own ads. No team will be without standard, all-in, live radio broadcasts.”
Video killed the radio star, and then the internet killed video — and the internet wasn’t satisfied so now it’s after radio.
