Roku is reportedly close to a deal to acquire Quibi’s catalogue of content after the mobile-only streamer shut down in December.
The Wall Street Journal suggests Roku is looking to acquire the rights to Quibi’s content but the specific details and financial terms of the proposed deal haven’t been revealed and the deal could still fall through.
Quibi, which was set-up by Jeffrey Katzenberg and Meg Whitman, had content deals in place with a number of Hollywood names including Guillermo del Toro, Steven Spielberg, Antoine Fuqua and Reese Witherspoon.
Its original deals with producers allowed Quibi to exhibit their shows on its service for seven years. According to the WSJ, some of the contracts suggest that the content can’t be aired on other platforms, however the report added that contract terms wouldn’t prevent Roku from showing the content on its service.
It’s thought Roku could look to make the content available for free on its Roku Channel, thus helping it to boost its appeal to viewers.
