The Rise of the Tight End!

Every now and then, there’s a shift in the National Football League.

In the 80s – the advent of the West Coast Offense.

In the 90s – the all-purpose running back – Running out the backfield and catching passes.

Forever – the glamour position – the Quarterback – Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees assaulting Dan Marino’s single season yardage record.

Now – The Tight end is definitely the position that’s changing the game with a major impact.

The 2011 stats don’t lie:

• Jimmy Graham (NO) 99 REC, 1,310 YDS, 11 TDS
• Rob Gronkowski (NE) 90 REC, 1,327 YDS, 17 TDS
• Brandon Pettigrew (DET) 83 REC, 777 YDS, 5 TDS
• Aaron Hernandez (NE) 79 REC, 910 YDS, 7 TDS
• Tony Gonzalez (ATL) 80 REC, 875 YDS, 7 TDS
• Vernon Davis (SF) 67 REC, 673 YDS, 6 TDS

No longer is public enamored with the Wide Receiver that runs a 4.4  / 40 YD dash.  Tight Ends are blocking less and rolling out more – in the offense and have become the focal point.

Oh, how we think of yesteryear when Kellen Winslow (SD) and Shannon Sharpe (DEN/BAL) were rare talents and stand outs in their position.  We are now seeing the fruit of its labor, when Vernon Davis (SF) was awarded the highest contract or a Tight end at 5YR / 37 MIL. Historically, Tight End’s made less $$$ than punters.

So, the question you ask? Is this position now the hot commodity? In 2011, only 11 TE’s were drafted.

Today, a 6’5” 260 LB TE is a necessity for your team. The Rise of the Tight End is Here!!!

What’s gonna interesting is the impact on defenses. They are having a hard time covering this new breed and usage of TE’s.

  2. I’m really inspired with your writing talents as neatly as with the layout to your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Either way keep up the nice high quality writing, it is rare to see a great blog like this one today..
