Announces Barnyard Birth

New dairy cow calf can be seen in the Prospect Park Zoo’s barn area

Brooklyn, NY – Dec. 24, 2012 – A newborn calf at the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Prospect Park Zoo lies in the hay in the barn area as Tetley, his mother, watches closely.

The male calf tipped the scales at 84 pounds at birth and is the first to be born at Prospect Park Zoo.

Tetley is a Shornhorn milking cow and her calf was sired by a Randall Lineback bull. The calf and his mother can be seen in zoo’s barn area along with geese, goats, sheep, and a turkey. The calf is growing quickly and could surpass 1,000 pounds when he reaches maturity.

The Wildlife Conservation Society saves wildlife and wild places worldwide.  We do so through science, global conservation, education and the management of the world’s largest system of urban wildlife parks, led by the flagship Bronx Zoo.  Together these activities change attitudes towards nature and help people imagine wildlife and humans living in harmony.  WCS is committed to this mission because it is essential to the integrity of life on earth.
